But does that mean that it’s easy? No! You still need to learn how to study effectively if you are aiming at passing your exams with flying colors.
To help you with your studies, we decided to compile a list of the most effective study skills that were shared by successful students during our research for this article. So if you want to learn how to master these skills and achieve better grades in school, read on!
1. Set goals (SMART).
Without their goals, people are like drifters without direction. They are easily distracted and can’t manage their time properly because they move to whatever comes at hand. While setting your goals make it very important to choose the right ones. It is not necessary that all of them must be related to academics or school-life. You can set any goal you want as long as it’s compelling enough for you to pursue it every day!
2. Plan ahead.
Planning helps you see what’s coming up ahead, so you’re prepared for any eventuality . Moreover , if the plan contains deadlines, this will help you stay focused on whatever task needs to be done next instead of drifting along with distractions. Therefore if one doesn’t know how to plan, they will never be able to manage their time or get anything done!
The best way to plan ahead and succeed in your goals is through the “project management” methodology. This means that you set a goal, decide on the project and go over its attributes. Then, once one has an idea of how long it should take them to achieve their goal, they need to organize all that information into a schedule (which can include deadlines) and then divide up tasks accordingly . After that one must determine what resources are needed for each task and track/monitor progress regularly.
3. Make lists!
It doesn’t matter if it’s for your academic life or daily chores: creating checklists is afire way to make sure nothing gets overlooked . You can write down everything that needs to be done, either on paper or your phone.
4. Study in short bursts.
Studying for more than 2 hours at a time is not recommended , since it hampers the ability to absorb information . One will lose focus after some time and all efforts of studying will go down the drain. Therefore , divide your study sessions into shorter periods, so you can keep yourself alert during each session!
5. Take regular breaks .
A break is not only beneficial for one’s health but also for their mental readiness to learn new information ! Make sure you take a couple of minutes between studying different subjects or topics, so that it helps transfer your thoughts from one thing to another. 6. Read around the subject.
While it’s crucial that one study the textbooks rigorously, they should also explore other writing on the same topic or theme . By doing so they will build broader knowledge of their field and this is what professors look for when they grade you. This will also make studying easier since most students find material written by experts more interesting than their regular textbook with information which is already known to them.
7. Listen to music; turn off your phone, shut down your laptop and be away from distractions .
Find out what kind of music helps you focus on studying, so you can have it on in the background. Also , one should take their phone off silent mode and put it where they can’t see it . This helps because most people are immediately tempted to look at their phones when they vibrate or make a sound.
Finally, try to study in an area that is totally distraction-free !
8. Think about what you’re learning .
Think deeply about the things you are studying! It won’t be too useful if one just reads something with no context of why they are learning this information in particular. While reading, ask yourself questions like “Where has this been used before?”, “How does this relate to something I’ve already learned? Why is it important?” etc. Moreover, it will be more interesting if one imagines oneself in a situation where they are utilizing the material that was previously studied .
9. Stay focused!
It’s easy to lose focus during studying hours , and that is why most students come home after an hour spent studying and don’t remember what they’ve just read or learned. One must force themselves not to look at social media, browse the internet, throw in some Youtube videos etc. while studying . It would help if one sets a timer for how long they can spend on such distractions so that they come back to their work once time runs out!
10. Take breaks !
This last tip is pretty obvious – but taking regular breaks from whatever you’re doing is crucial for your mental health . Taking breaks will help you maintain your concentration during studying and enjoy the satisfaction of having achieved something instead of feeling like everything was a waste.
