# Applied Mathematics and Statistics

## Research

In this field we use the power of mathematics to better understand the world. We are motivated by questions about understanding complex and chaotic systems. We deal with big data sets and link micro-dynamics to macro-level patterns.

Part of our research uses mathematics as a toolbox to help solve empirical problems. This involves applications in everything from medicine to economics. For example, we work together with pharmaceutical companies on rate estimation in chemical reactions.

In addition to direct applications, another component of our research is developing rigorous mathematical tools. Here an important an area is computer- aided proofs in analysis and dynamical systems. By developing methods for rigorous computing, where results can be proved rather than just simulated, we can give solutions to problems in non-linear systems that resist solution by traditional mathematical methods. As for statistical methods we focus on, for example, non-linear error-in-variables models and time series analysis.
